Limits on Hours of Work

Maximum hours per day:

8 hours, or
-
If the regular workday is longer, then that number of hours.

Maximum hours per week:

48 hours
-
Working More Than the Limits?
-
Employees must agree to work more than the limits in writing.

Even with agreement, the employee cannot work more than 60 hours/week unless a different limit is prescribed by regulation.
Revoking Agreements:

Employee: Can be revoked with 2 weeks’ written notice
Eating & Resting Periods


Eating Breaks
-
Minimum break: 30 minutes after no more than 5 consecutive hours of work.
Alternative Arrangement
-
Can split the 30 minutes into two shorter breaks, if agreed (written or verbal).
Pay Not Required
-
Employers do not have to pay for meal breaks unless required by contract.
Rest Periods Daily Rest
-
At least 11 consecutive hours free from work per day.

Exception:
-
On-call employees called in during off-hours do not get this daily rest protection.
Between Shifts
-
At least 8 hours between shifts unless:
-
Total work time across both shifts is 13 hours, or
-
Employee agrees otherwise.
Weekly Rest
Either:
-
24 consecutive hours off every week, or
-
48 consecutive hours off every two weeks.
